Letohrad (Orlickoústecko) - The town of Letohrad in the Orlickoústecko region wants to transform the pentagonal chapel of St. John of Nepomuk into a memorial of Baroque pilgrimages. There could, for example, be copies of Baroque statues in the ambulatories. This was stated by Deputy Mayor Martin Hatka to ČTK.

"They would serve as a teaser for interesting memorial sites, perhaps within the Pardubice region," Hatka said. Many forms for statue copies have already been created in the past and could be reused, the Deputy Mayor mentioned.

The phenomenon of Baroque pilgrimages in our region could also be mapped, for instance, by a documentary film. "A seasonal café with multifunctional spaces and a small parking lot should be created below the chapel," Hatka said.

The chapel, which was built between 1734 and 1736, is owned by the Roman Catholic Church. It is only accessible during the summer tourist season. The town would like to give it a year-round function.

This popular excursion site is gradually being repaired with grants from the Ministry of Culture. The city is looking for suitable sources for the new project and will attempt to obtain funds from Norwegian funds, for example. So far, it has completed an architectural study.

The name of the chapel's designer is not known. Including the ambulatories, it has a pentagonal floor plan according to the five stars above the saint's head. The ambulatories have onion-shaped turrets with bells. Only a fragment of the rich ceiling painting has been preserved. The Stations of the Cross in the ambulatories were painted by Dominik Umlauf in the second half of the 19th century.
