The book presents a unique comprehensive interpretation of the development of architecture from the second half of the 18th century to the present day. The encyclopedic knowledge and many years of experience of the critic Frampton allow him to evaluate the history of modern architecture with perspective and to trace connections with political and economic history as well as with social development. Despite its synthetic nature, the book provides countless pieces of information and insights about architectural works in all parts of the world, while the author manages to maintain a clear and coherent structure of the text.
The book was first published in 1980. Since then, Frampton has gradually added sections dedicated to the latest developments and supplemented some earlier chapters, so that in 2020 the fifth, expanded edition of this unique compendium was released. The first Czech edition (2004) was a translation of the third edition of the book from 1992. This second Czech edition makes the aforementioned latest fifth English edition of the seminal work by the world-renowned author accessible to readers.
