Vladimír Karfík

The publishing house ATELIER IM Luhačovice is preparing to release the Czech version of the autobiographical book by Vladimír KARFÍK in the second half of 2012, which the author created in the 1980s with the wish that the publishing house would publish the book. Alongside the book, a two-hour documentary was filmed by the filmmaker and film historian, Mr. Jiří Novotný.

It was planned for both parts to be released together and to serve as expert knowledge for the study of the life and work of architect Karfík not only at the VUT but also for the general public. The professor wrote a longer introduction to the book, which was published as a promotional publication and deals mainly with his practice, mostly in Zlín, where he was the head of the construction department of Baťa for sixteen years (the predecessor of the company Centroprojekt) and also his construction practice abroad.
At the end of the 1980s, it was uncertain whether it would be possible to publish the memoir in its entirety. A smaller publication thus supplemented the opportunity to get acquainted with the whole issue.
However, after 1989, the publishing house additionally did not have the necessary financial amount and together with the author welcomed the possibility of the work being published in Slovakia. Prof. Ing. arch. Vladimír Karfík contributed much to Slovak architecture and construction, and it was noble of the Slovak Architects' Association to prepare and publish the book. The work attracted great attention and the original intention to publish it in Czech with supplements, which may now be released, and also with materials from the family archive, was revived. Additionally, film material is also being processed, which will be distributed together with the book.
We care about informing you of this fact and at the same time expressing a request for firm orders, as we will be able to regulate the print run. Our Slovak colleagues are favorable to the idea and are cooperating.
