Brno – The Janáček Cultural Center in Brno will be built for 2.3 billion crowns by a consortium of three companies. The city council decided today on the selection of the consortium named JKC Brno. Three other bidders were competing for the contract. The council selected the most advantageous offer, stated Filip Poňuchálek, spokesperson for the Brno city hall, in a press release. However, the actual start of construction is delayed by administrative proceedings at the Office for the Protection of Competition (ÚOHS).
The consortium consists of the companies OHLA ŽS, Strabag Land and Engineering Construction, and Unistav Construction. "Despite the complexities accompanying the tender for the contractor, we have today selected the consortium of companies that will build the center. The bid price of the selected consortium was 2,298,600,000 crowns, and the construction will last for 36 months. However, an objection has been filed against the tender procedure, which is being addressed by the antimonopoly office. Until it makes a decision, the contract with the selected contractor cannot be signed. We expect progress in September. If everything goes well, we want to be prepared for the quickest possible conclusion of the contract and start of construction," said Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS).
Funding will be provided by the Ministry of Culture with 600 million crowns, Brno Communications with 332 million, and the South Moravian Region with 100 million. The city will cover the rest from its budget.
The Janáček Cultural Center will serve as a large concert hall for the Brno Philharmonic, with seating for 1,200 people. It will be built in the gap between Veselá and Besední streets. Previously, there was a parking lot here, and since 2018, there have been underground garages that were created as the first phase of the construction. As the city has not yet managed to follow up on the construction of the garages, they remain unutilized and are currently in a suspended state.
