Karlovy Vary - The Karlovy Vary Region will seek to reclaim approximately 1.2 million crowns that it had to pay for violating budgetary discipline during the renovation of Jan Becher's villa in Karlovy Vary. The money is to be reclaimed from the company responsible for technical supervision of the project. The sanction was imposed by the Office of the Regional Council of the Northwest Cohesion Region, and since the region did not succeed with any of its appeals, it had to pay the amount. Deputy Governor Petr Navrátil (ČSSD) informed ČTK today that there should not be a problem with recovering the damages.
The costs of repairing the dilapidated building amounted to about 88.7 million crowns. Of this, 77.6 million was an EU subsidy and more than 11 million crowns were paid by the Karlovy Vary Region, which owns the villa. However, compared to the original contract, the villa was equipped with cheaper sanitary facilities, and the difference amounted to precisely around 1.2 million crowns. "The technical supervision should have kept an eye on it, but mistakes can happen. For such cases, it is insured, so I expect that there will be no problem for us to agree without a potential lawsuit," Navrátil stated.
The lavish Karlovy Vary villa of industrialist Johann Gustav Becher, former owner of the famous liqueur factory, transformed into an interactive gallery last year after reconstruction. The operation of the villa is managed by the Gallery of Art Karlovy Vary. There are creative workshops, a library, a multipurpose social hall with facilities, exhibition halls, galleries, and a repository available here. The villa also includes an outdoor studio that was created by converting a garage into a garden house. This year, for the first time, the villa also served for some events of the International Film Festival.
