Liberec – Liberec plans to relocate the bus station facilities to the administrative building Uran, which is adjacent to it. The facilities are currently located at the station in construction containers, which are a disgrace to the city. According to Mayor Jaroslav Zámečník (Mayors for the Liberec Region), they want to build the new facilities on the ground floor of the seven-story building.
"So that the containers can be removed. This means that next year should be the last year for these old, outdated, and unsightly containers at the bus station," the mayor told reporters.
The city has long found the condition of the bus station unsatisfactory, as it does not provide adequate services to passengers or transport operators. During the last modernization of the platforms in the mid-1990s, there was not enough money for the terminal building, and since then, passengers have been using a temporary structure made of construction containers. In the past, the station was owned by a private owner. Liberec purchased the approximately one-hectare area along with the containers for 23.5 million crowns in 2018.
The city wants to build facilities for the bus station as part of the planned reconstruction of the Uran building on May 1st Avenue. The renovation will require about 84 million crowns, and the city will apply for a subsidy from a European program. The facade is the main aspect in need of renewal.
However, the facilities in Uran should not be the final solution for the bus station. Based on an agreement between the city and the region, a new terminal should be created in the spaces of the main railway station. "In this case, it’s an investment by the Liberec Region, but we will collaborate on it,” said the mayor. Ideally, the terminal at the new location could be established within ten years. "It will depend on how the Liberec Region agrees with the Railway Administration and Czech Railways, and of course, we will help with that. We are interested in making it happen," the mayor added.
In Liberec's plans, part of the current bus station area is to be used for the construction of a parking garage. The remaining part should be transformed into a park after the new terminal is established, according to the mayor.
