Písek - The new pool in Písek will not be located in the originally planned site near the city center. This was decided in today’s referendum. Of the city residents who participated, 88 percent voted for relocating the proposed project, said Roman Ondřich, spokesman for the Písek city hall, to ČTK. The result is binding, and the city must comply with it.
The turnout in the referendum was 44.5 percent. 9471 voters supported the relocation of the planned water park, while 1042 backed the project proposed by the city hall. According to him, the water park, costing about 190 million crowns, was supposed to be built on the site of the current pool. "The result of the referendum will definitely delay the proposed project. The councilors will discuss it at their meeting on January 31," Ondřich stated.
Písek has been talking about building a new pool for some time. Last year, it decided to start preparing the project, and this year, work was supposed to begin. However, a few months ago, a petition emerged in the city, whose authors claim that the pool spoils the appearance of the historical city center. Therefore, they began to strive for the new water park to be built elsewhere. The petitioners gathered a sufficient number of signatures to call for a referendum, which the city office combined with the first round of presidential elections.
"The preparations for the new water park project, which was supposed to be built on the site of the existing pool, cost about four million crowns. So the city has lost this money," Ondřich said. According to him, it is not yet clear where the new water park will be located. However, relocating the pool will reportedly result in increased costs for the project. The city may have to purchase some plots of land, for example.
Ondřich stated that it is currently unclear when the construction of the water park will begin. The approximately 30-year-old indoor pool remains in operation for now. "In December, its condition was assessed by structural engineers, who determined that with some modifications, it can still function for a while," Ondřich said.
