Písek - The location for the new swimming stadium in Písek will be decided by a referendum of the city's residents. It will take place simultaneously with the first round of presidential elections, scheduled for January of next year. Písek wants to build a pool for 190 million crowns at the site of the current swimming stadium near the city center. A petition, which gathered the necessary number of signatures for a referendum, opposes the location. According to the petitioners, the facility should not be built in the planned place as it would interfere with the panorama of the historic core of the city.
"The referendum is binding and we will adhere to its results," stated the mayor of Písek, Ondřej Veselý (ČSSD). In the vote, citizens will respond to the question of whether they support relocating the pool to another site. According to Veselý, any relocation of the building would lead to an increase in costs by 30 to 50 million crowns. "The city would have to acquire land at the new location, which would obviously raise costs," he noted.
The current pool in Písek was established in the early 1980s as part of the "Z" initiative, where people participated as unpaid volunteers in construction work. The lifespan of the pool, according to the city administration, is already past its peak, and there is a risk of closing the facility for safety reasons. If the construction of a new swimming center were to take place at the same location, it would begin in a few months and last for two years. However, changing the location could delay the completion of the project by several years.
