Luhačovice (Zlín Region) - The spa town of Luhačovice will once again attempt to register on the prestigious list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This lengthy process will now be undertaken in conjunction with the West Bohemian spa triangle and other European spa locations. If everything goes as planned, the Moravian spa could make it onto the list by 2015. František Hubáček, the mayor of Luhačovice, stated this today. Luhačovice, with its collection of buildings designed by architect Dušan Jurkovič, has not made this attempt to be included on the UNESCO list for the first time. Years ago, however, they withdrew their application at the last moment. According to Hubáček, it became clear that their request would not pass the UNESCO committee. Now, however, they have much stronger arguments for the registration. Luhačovice has joined forces in their efforts with Karlovy Vary, Františkovy Lázně, Mariánské Lázně, and other spa towns in Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, France, and England. According to the mayor, there is only one purpose: to register those spa locations that have historical value, represent what spas looked like in the past, and how they have evolved in the present. "In our case, it is primarily about the spa complex, more precisely the conservation area that exists in Luhačovice. The precise specification should be made by the Ministry of Culture," noted Mayor František Hubáček. The registration process itself, which is very lengthy, will begin next year. If all candidates manage to prepare all the materials, the submission will take place in France in September 2014. "If we make the deadline, then sometime in the summer of 2015, it should be announced whether this nomination was successful or not," added the mayor. According to Hubáček, registration on the prestigious UNESCO list would attract another target group of tourists to the most beautiful Moravian spas, such as Japanese and Koreans. Moreover, the "seal" of UNESCO brings a level of quality that entices visitors to see something exclusive, he concluded.
