Marienbad - The town of Marienbad has received a second fine for a grant project aimed at revitalizing the former barracks in Hamrníky into a relaxation area. In total, the city had to return over 12 million crowns to the ROP Northwest from approximately 40 million it received in 2011 for developing the area. For the first phase of the project, the city already received a fine of six million earlier, and now it has paid another for the second phase. The reason was said to be discrepancies in the selection of the contractor, said Marienbad mayor Martin Kalina (Pirates) to ČTK.
According to the mayor, the city has already paid the fine. "We discussed this at the council meeting on April 12, and the payment deadline was on the 13th, so we didn't have much maneuvering space left. Now we will proceed with further logical steps. This includes expanding the existing lawsuit against the lottery company, and of course we will also be asking for a reduction of the fine," Kalina said.
Both fines were issued to the city by the regional council of ROP Northwest. Initially, Marienbad faced a return of up to 24 million crowns for the first phase but managed to reduce it to 6.2 million. According to Kalina, it may now be possible to reduce the fine to about one fifth.
The devastated barracks were transformed into a park and quiet zone by the city in 2011. The dilapidated military buildings were demolished, and in their place pathways, play elements, new plantings, and a BMX track were created. The park is heavily used by dog owners, and the city plans to build a skatepark there as well.
