Masaryk University is preparing further repairs for the Faculty of Arts

Brno - Masaryk University will begin reconstruction of the last remaining buildings in the area of the Faculty of Arts on Arna Nováka Street at the end of summer. The departments affected by the repairs will need to relocate to temporary spaces. The reconstruction will cost 428 million crowns, most of which the university has secured from the state budget.

The most significant interventions will affect buildings C and D, where the faculty's administration and the study department are located. Academic departments will use temporary spaces at the Brno University of Technology on Údolní Street and at Masaryk University in Joštova Street 13.

"Non-academic departments will move to Gorkého 13," said the faculty secretary Ivo Jurtík. Students and staff will not be far from their usual operations. Additionally, the relocations are planned for the holidays when, for example, the study department is traditionally out of service. "Therefore, it will not mean any significant change compared to the usual state,” added the secretary.

The first phase of repairs in the area of the Faculty of Arts, nearly costing half a billion crowns, finished last September. The second phase involves a complete overhaul of the entrance to the area from Arna Nováka Street and the entire building D. In its place, six floors of lecture halls will be created. Workers will completely strip the building, change the interior layout and staircases, reconstruct technological networks, and add insulation.

In the adjacent building C, work will primarily focus on improving poor structural stability. The building will undergo floor replacements, distribution upgrades, modifications to the central heating system, and partial repairs of the water supply and sewage systems.

Teaching is set to return to the renovated buildings from the autumn semester of 2018. However, this still depends on the tender processes and the speed of the construction contractor.
