České Budějovice - The city council of České Budějovice is most likely to establish a zone for relaxation and leisure activities in part of the area of the former barracks in the Čtyři Dvory district. A new residential neighborhood was originally intended to be built on the site, but the company that pursued this plan apparently cannot realize its intention. Therefore, the city council wants to terminate the long-term lease of the facilities in the barracks early, said Deputy Mayor Miroslav Joch (ČSSD) to journalists today. Representatives of the city hall are now negotiating with the company that has the facility rented regarding the conditions for terminating the contract. The company claims compensation for work carried out in the former barracks, which included, for example, the demolition of buildings or land reclamation. "The original proposal from the company was around 40 million crowns, after another meeting we reached 35 million and we are still continuing with the negotiations,” said Joch. The company had obtained a space of nearly 15 hectares for rent years ago, with the intention of creating a vibrant center with apartments, shops, and leisure options. The dilapidated area near the Vltava and Máj housing estates, where over 40,000 people live, was to be transformed into a multifunctional complex costing nearly three billion crowns, featuring a square, offices, schools, and greenery. In the area of the former barracks, however, there should still be space for two other planned projects. One is an ice hockey hall, which former Czechoslovak national team player Jaroslav Pouzar wants to build for the training of young players. The second project is a concert hall, designed in the shape of a manta ray by the late architect Jan Kaplický some time ago.
