Brno - A new lookout tower will be built on Židenický Hill in Brno. The project, estimated at around one million crowns, will stem from competition proposals submitted by students of the Brno University of Technology (VUT). Construction could begin as early as this year, said the deputy mayor of the Brno-Židenice district, Petr Kunc (TOP 09), at a press conference today.
The lookout tower will be located on a hill above Viniční Street. New paths will connect it to nearby walking destinations such as Akátky, Údolíček, and Bílá hora, and it will only be accessible on foot. Kunc hopes the new views of Brno and its surroundings will attract people. "The view from Bílá hora is overused, but from Židenický Hill it is not," he said. The tower's visitor numbers should also benefit from its location on a walking route that connects Židenice, Vinohrady, and Maloměřice.
The competition for the design of the lookout tower was announced on February 12 by the leadership of Židenice in cooperation with the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Brno University of Technology. "We have been collaborating with students and teachers from the architecture department of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at VUT Brno for the third year now," Kunc noted. They regularly organize a creative workshop called Artefakt, where university students creatively engage with public spaces.
"For us, collaboration with the municipal district is very beneficial; students have the opportunity to work on real projects through these initiatives," said Václav Kočí, an assistant professor at VUT who also serves on the seven-member jury evaluating the proposals for the lookout tower.
Students must submit their competition projects by April 20, and the jury will announce the results five days later. After the competition, Židenice's leadership plans to present all proposals to the public at an exhibition. The construction will be financed by Židenice.
