Brno – The police want to use part of the barracks in Brno-Židenice, among other things, as the seat of their city directorate, negotiating a land exchange with the city. The estimated costs for the renovation of this part of the complex are about two billion. However, a more precise estimate of the costs will only be revealed by a study. This was stated by the director of the South Moravian police, Leoš Tržil, in response to a query from ČTK.
About half of the barracks are owned by the state, with the Ministry of Defense managing the property. The other half towards Rokytova Street belongs to the city. The police would like to use this city part, as they already own three buildings in the complex.
"We have concluded a cooperation agreement with the city; this year we would like, among other things, to finalize the land exchange. There are several options available, the latest consideration is that we would exchange the Bratislavská-Příční complex," said the director.
He added that the complex in Židenice would be for about 800 people. The study will show whether it will be necessary to demolish the buildings on site and construct new ones or whether renovation will be possible.
"Of the buildings we already own there, only one is usable for revitalization. These are old buildings that are also quite damp," Tržil said. "It will definitely be a long-term process; I assume that it will be built gradually in certain units," he concluded.
Individual workplaces of the Brno city directorate are currently located in different places, which is neither comfortable nor efficient for the police or the visitors. If the police were to acquire a cohesive complex, they could free up the currently used properties. This would also involve the Židenice district department, which is now located outside the city district, and the traffic inspectorate, which currently operates on Renčova Street in Řečkovice.
The so-called Svatopluk Barracks in Židenice date back to the 1920s; they originally served the Czechoslovak infantry. In January 1933, an unsuccessful fascist coup took place there. After World War II, the extensive complex also served military education.
