Brno - Brno today began the demolition in the area of the former barracks in Židenice, so that it will be possible to build the next part of the large city ring road in the future. The barracks buildings stand under the future road viaduct and at the location of the pillars that will support it. The demolition is expected to last until the end of the year. The Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) expects that the actual construction could start in 2019.
Two connecting structures named Tomkovo náměstí and Rokytova will lead a new four-lane road from the exit of the Husovice tunnels across the Svitava River, with the viaduct spanning the railway corridor and ending at Rokytova street in the hill to Vinohrady. In total, it will involve more than a kilometer of new road, which is intended to relieve the currently overloaded ring road and the intersection of Svatoplukova and Rokytova streets.
The preparatory work will cost the city about a quarter of a billion, while the state will invest four billion. The construction is expected to take four years. In 2017 and 2018, some houses near Tomkovo náměstí will be demolished, which have already experienced demolition in the past due to the construction of a larger road. Houses on Provazníková, Dolnopolní, and Kaloudova will also be demolished. The city has already purchased more than half of the properties.
In the Židenice barracks, part of which is slowly being demolished, military vehicles were previously garaged, and there was also a gas station in the area.
The viaduct, which will run above them, is expected to lead into a tunnel under the Vinohrady housing estate in the future. "The road will be prepared for later connection. This is still in preparation, and geotechnical and geological surveys are being conducted," said David Fiala from ŘSD.
The construction will also affect public transport. Trolleybuses from Bohunice will terminate at the new temporary loop Kohoutova, and buses will be used to travel further to Vinohrady and Líšeň. Tram service through Tomkovo náměstí is to be preserved as much as possible.
