Cheb - The city of Cheb, with the help of experts, is choosing a possible future form for the former Dominican monastery. It has utilized an architectural competition organized by Petr Parléř, which evaluates 27 proposals. The monastery in the center of Cheb is currently unused, and the city is considering its use for a basic art school, spokesperson for the municipality Simona Liptáková informed CTK today. "Originally, 89 proposals were submitted to the competition, but 27 were delivered. From these, a five-member committee will select the three most successful," said mayor Petr Navrátil (CSSD). Competitors were to develop an architectural proposal for the revitalization of the Dominican monastery in connection with Jánské náměstí. The goal of the competition is to adapt the space of the historically valuable monument for the needs of the 21st century. The Dominican monastery was just a few years ago a cultural venue, home to the city's Production Center Kamenná. Concerts and rehearsals took place there, among other activities. However, after the completion of the Svoboda Cultural Center, the building has practically remained empty. The most suitable current use for the monastery seems to be relocating the Jindřich Jindřich Basic Art School into its premises. Part of the revitalization solution for the monastery also includes the appropriate development of the surrounding area, particularly the Jánské náměstí and the streets Kamenná and Dominikánská. The Cheb Basic Art School is the largest municipal school with 960 students. The city subsidizes the operation of the basic art school by about 700,000 crowns annually. The school needs to expand, but the extension is estimated to cost around eight million crowns. The reconstruction of the monastery could cost tens of millions of crowns or more. However, this historically significant building would find use, and it would free up current spaces of the art school for the city.
