Olomouc - The Olomouc city hall is expected to decide in the spring months whether to proceed with the long-planned renovation of the winter stadium, which has been in an unsatisfactory condition for years. The reconstruction depends on whether the city can agree on resolving property rights issues with the owner of the adjacent land. If this does not happen, the city will consider building a new hall on the outskirts of Olomouc. This was stated by Mayor Martin Novotný (ODS) to reporters today. The city management will negotiate with the private owner of the land near the stadium in the coming days. "We must be prepared for the meeting, including the option that we may not reach an agreement. Therefore, the council has considered an alternative solution, building a new winter stadium. It discussed whether there are suitable locations for the construction, and not just hypothetically, but in a real sense," said the mayor. He added that according to the city management, the most suitable location for a potential investment appears to be the area of Pražská východ near the exit road to Mohelnice. "But I definitely do not mean to say that a decision has been made regarding the construction of a new stadium. We will see how the negotiations, which await us in the near future, will end. A definitive decision should be made within a few weeks," said Novotný. The existing Olomouc winter stadium has been dilapidated for a long time. The city hall originally wanted to convert it into a multifunctional hall for 1.5 billion crowns. However, two years ago, the city announced that this plan was unrealistic in the current financial crisis. In recent years, the hall has undergone only the most necessary repairs. Recently, a petition was initiated in the regional city for the repair of the existing stadium or the construction of a new one. The Olomouc winter stadium dates back to the 1970s. The city hall acquired it in June 2004 at an auction. Even before that, it purchased a claim that was secured by a lien on the winter stadium at an advantageous price. The object thus cost approximately nine million crowns.
