Teplice – The renovation of the Art Nouveau train station building in Teplice will begin this summer. The first phase of the work, which includes the reconstruction of the façade and the adjacent platform, will cost 236 million crowns. This was reported today by Dušan Gavenda, spokesman for the Czech Railway Administration. The construction company that won the tender will start work in July, with the completion of the first phase planned in just under two years.
The current terminal building in the spa town located under the Ore Mountains dates back to 1856. The extensive structure was built in the Neo-Romanesque style and was also the headquarters of the private Ústecko-teplická railway in its time. The heritage-protected building no longer meets current requirements, which is why the Czech Railway Administration decided on its complete renovation, the spokesman stated.
In the first phase, the roofs, including the trusses, and the entire façade will be repaired. The Czech Railway Administration will have all windows and doors replaced. "Part of the work will include the reconstruction of platform 1, which will be designed to be barrier-free with an elevated boarding edge," Gavenda said. The historical roofing of the platform and the adjacent track will also be renovated.
According to Gavenda, the new appearance of the building was designed after a thorough restoration survey and takes into account its heritage protection. "The building will be cleaned of poor-quality period modifications, and its original historical elements will be restored. The original ocher color of the façade will be revived, combined with details in brick color, while the metal cladding and elements will be dark gray. The artificial shingles and metal on the roof will be replaced with templates imitating the original slate covering," the spokesman said.
The Czech Railway Administration is now also continuing the project preparation for the second phase, which will include, in addition to the complete renovation of the terminal building's interior, the construction of new parking areas and the modification of the transformer station with the installation of a photovoltaic power plant on its roof.
