Teplice - Teplice presented the future appearance of the space in front of the main train station. The cost of transforming this busy area is estimated at 120 million crowns. There will be fewer parking spaces in the streets. They are to be replaced by a new parking lot at the former bus station and a parking lot behind the train station, which is being prepared by the Railway Administration. The study of the new space design was drafted by architect Václav Brejška.
Around the monumentally protected dispatch building, whose renovation was completed last year, passes one of the transport arteries of the spa town. According to the study, an average of 20,000 cars pass through the traffic-light intersection in front of the station daily. The heavy traffic is especially evident in the morning before school starts and in the afternoon after it ends.
The large traffic light-controlled intersection will be replaced by a roundabout, which, according to the study, will clarify the area and allow for shorter pedestrian crossings. The organization is designed to prefer public transport. There will also be space for a promenade.
Sidewalks will be widened, buses will have more bus stops available, and over 60 trees will be planted. Some of them will appear in front of the train station building. The reconstruction will include the replacement of street lighting, furniture elements, and all surfaces. "After the completion of the first stage of the train station building reconstruction last year, another significant change is coming, namely the reconstruction of the public space in front of the station. This step will significantly improve the quality of public space and bring greater safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles," said Deputy Mayor Hynek Hanza (ODS) to the councilors on Wednesday evening.
Part of the project is a separate cycle path that will connect 28. října Street with Celní Street and ensure comfortable movement for cyclists away from sidewalks and roads. "The area addressed by the project currently resembles an exit road rather than an entrance gate to the spa town. Therefore, changes will be especially appreciated by pedestrians, public transport users, and cyclists," stated the architect. Next year, the project could receive a building permit, in 2026 the city plans to select a contractor, and in 2027 for implementation.
