Brno - A new parking garage in Brno on Polní Street for 100 cars will not be built yet. According to original expectations, it was supposed to be completed by the end of this year. Later, the start of construction was postponed to this date, but Brněnské komunikace (BKOM) eventually canceled the tender and are now seeking to quickly announce a new competition, said Vladimíra Navrátilová, spokesperson for the city company, to ČTK. When construction might begin is currently unclear.

The construction is expected to cost over 21 million crowns and will offer parking next to the headquarters of the city company, which is also near the Justice Palace and the Rondo hall. At least partially, it aims to meet the high demand for parking in this area. According to the tender documentation, it should also be possible to park on the roof, where vehicles powered by gas will be allowed entry. Usually, such vehicles are not permitted in parking garages.

The building is to be located on the site of the current parking lot and will be the first one further away from the historical center. Until now, all parking garages have been built within it. Brněnské komunikace has built garages on Kopečná Street and Husova Street. Private investors operate a parking garage on Kounicova Street and near the Janáček Theatre. With the introduction of resident parking from this September, which has expanded beyond the historical center since November, the demand for parking garages has significantly increased, making them more crowded than before.

The city will now strive to accelerate primarily the construction of park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts of Brno, connected to public transport, in order to prevent commuters from congesting the city streets. At the same time, some city districts are striving to build modular parking garages in housing estates where residents lack parking spaces. However, the projects are not yet on paper.
