Prague - Twenty-five designers, studios, or even stores received nominations tonight for the Czech Grand Design award. This year, for the first time, there will be a separate category for jewelers, with nominees Jiří Belda, Klára Šípková, and Zdeněk Vacek with Daniel Pošta.

In the other six categories, there are also three nominees each; for Discovery of the Year, four authors are competing, including Anna Marešová, who has already received the National Award for Student Design for her design of erotic aids and has earned significant media attention for it.
In the Designer of the Year category, this year’s potential winners include Jaroslav Juřica with his chair No.2, Jiří Pelcl for the Star Track light, the Snug armchair, the Stone drink set, and the Luxury Dwelling furniture collection, or Rony Plesl for the Uovo chandelier and the Poppyhead drink set. Among fashion designers, Zuzana Kubíčková, Hana Zárubová, and Denisa Nová have received nominations.
Among graphic designers, well-known names and participants from previous years of the competition appear - Petr Babák and the studio Laboratoř, Matěj Činčera, and Štěpán Malovec. The Photographer of the Year category currently includes names like Adam Holý, Bára Prášilová, who is competing with photographs from the Air Force collection for Hana Zárubová, and Karin Zadrick. For the Retailer of the Year title, the nominees are Minty, Papelote, and Prague Kabinet, and Manufacturer of the Year could be Brokis, Elton hodinářská, or Lasvit.
A professional jury composed of curators, theorists, and journalists will evaluate the design products in another round, and the results will be announced on March 10 at the Stavovské Theater.
Last year’s award for Best Design was won by the studio Olgoj Chorchoj for their design of sleds, lamps, the collection of drinking glasses, a teapot, and cassette flooring. The studio also prepared the form of the award for this year’s laureates. Designers Michal Froněk and Jan Němeček created a large cast iron medal with the number one.
Just like in other fields, the annual awards for Best Design are intended to regularly draw public attention from both professionals and laypersons to extraordinary individuals and achievements in the given field. The Czech Grand Design awards are organized by Profil Media, which has been preparing the Designblok showcase in Prague for several years.
