Písek - A new footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists designed by architect Josef Pleskot has connected two parts of Písek. The construction, costing approximately 50 million crowns excluding tax, consists of two arms that resemble the sides of a triangle. People can travel from the Václav suburb across the Otava River to Hradiště using it. The footbridge is named after the political prisoner Dagmar Šimková, who lived near this location. City officials said this today during the handover of the building from the contractor.

Architect Josef Pleskot is a native of Písek. According to him, the modern structure is inspired by the evolution of modern construction technologies around the world. "It is truly at the level of the third millennium. I'm very glad that there is nothing old-fashioned about it; on the contrary, it is very progressive," Pleskot told ČTK. He stated that he has not designed anything for Písek in the past. He added that he faced criticism from the city's residents during the preparation of the footbridge. "I registered a lot of slander and gossip here, saying that this structure doesn’t fit. When I walked through the square, I overheard conversations like: 'That's him, who wants to ruin our city'," said Pleskot.

The construction of the footbridge began in late February of this year. However, the project preparation took much longer. "The footbridge was seriously discussed for the first time in 2013," said the mayor of Písek, Eva Vanžurová. Pleskot's design for the footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists across the Otava dates back to 2014. The lightweight steel structure stands at a location where there used to be a ford, and where a bridge was already planned in the 1930s.

The footbridge will also connect to an under-construction bike path on the left bank of the Otava. According to Vanžurová, it could start serving the public around mid-October.
