Brno - The South Moravian Foreign Police and Border Police will leave half of their 63 facilities by the middle of this year, many of which are considered very interesting by real estate agents. Part of the facilities will be returned to Czech Railways, and most will be transferred to the Office for Representation of the State in Property Matters. Notable facilities include crossings in Lanžhot near Břeclav, in Mikulov, in Hatě near Znojmo, and in Sudoměřice in the Hodonín region.

"We are leaving all crossings. We will only remain in a few facilities in the border area that are not directly on the border," said South Moravian Foreign Police and Border Police spokesman Roman Pittner today to ČTK. If checks at the former border crossings were to be temporarily reinstated, the police would have nowhere to return. During the checks, they would likely operate from mobile units.
The Office for Representation of the State in Property Matters will first offer the crossings for free to state institutions and then to municipalities. If there is no interest in the properties, the office will seek other interested parties. The customs houses may be suitable for building shopping centers, gas stations, motels, and other similar establishments.
"There will probably be a fight for properties located in busy areas," said real estate agent Lenka Růžičková.
The most attractive facility is the highway crossing Břeclav-Brodské. It is located on the D2 highway at the entrance to the Czech Republic, with thousands of cars passing through daily. It is a modern and spacious complex. The crossing is the busiest route between the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
A former crossing Mikulov-Drassenhofen at the border with Austria may be interesting. It is located on the busy route Brno-Vienna, which is full of cars in the summer when thousands of tourists head for the Adriatic. "We don’t yet know how the construction of the planned expressway R52 will go, so it remains to be seen whether and how the crossing can be utilized," said Mikulov mayor Rostislav Koštial to ČTK.
Although the Hatě-Klein Haugsdorf crossing is not in the best condition, it is located next to a massive shopping center and market, which Austrians head to for cheap shopping. It can be expected that the former customs house will eventually become part of this shopping zone.
Quality buildings include the crossing at the Slovak border in Sudoměřice. It is situated on the busy Hodonín-Skalica route. Similarly, the nearby crossing in Staré Hrozenkov is in good condition.
Following the integration of the Czech Republic into the Schengen area, police checks at the borders were abolished. About 500 employees left the Foreign Police in the region due to the changes. It currently has one thousand workers who will operate in the interior.
