Prague - Czech Post has once again offered for sale the premises of the former St. Gabriel's Monastery in Prague's Smíchov. The minimum bidding price for the premises has been set at 353.35 million CZK, which corresponds to the value based on an expert assessment and the price at which Czech Post offered the property for purchase during the last electronic auction. This was stated to ČTK by the Post's spokesman Matyáš Vitík.
Detailed information, including technical specifications, can be found on the Czech Post website. The minimum price has been reduced from the original offer in 2016 by about 120 million CZK.
No one registered to purchase the former monastery in September this year as part of the online auction. The Post has long sought to sell the historical property. The former convent of Benedictine nuns is located next to Kinsky Garden on Holečková Street. The premises include the original convent church of the Annunciation of the Lord, commonly known as St. Gabriel's.
Prague 5 has shown interest in the premises. Its representatives recently approved a call stating that if today's auction fails, the Ministry of Culture or the capital city should attempt to acquire it.
The state, represented by the Ministry of Postal Services and Telegraphs, purchased the monastery in 1919 and established a Check Post Office there, which operated until 1931. The vacated spaces were taken over by the Postal Museum. After World War II, the main user of the building gradually became the Postal Money Order Central Office, later renamed VAKUS, which remained in the property until 1998. In the same year, the Postal Directorate of Prague moved in, departing shortly after 2010. By that time, only part of the Postal Museum remained in the building, which left at the end of 2016.
Czech Post plans to dispose of unnecessary assets worth approximately 2.7 billion CZK over the next three years.
