Brno - The Nádražní street in front of the main train station in Brno will be completely impassable from this Tuesday to next Tuesday. Until now, it was possible to drive along the station building from Nové Sady towards Koliště Street or to Benešova Street towards the Grand bus station. The work on the space modification is progressing faster than anticipated, the Brno city hall informed in a press release published on the website www.kopemezabrno.cz.
"The work on the space in front of the station is progressing faster than previously expected. Thanks to this, the second phase of the modifications can start now. From April 25, the passage towards Koliště and the bus station at Grand will also be closed to drivers. Therefore, drivers will not be able to drive alongside the main station building. From May 2, a temporary passage will open near OC Letmo towards Nové Sady," the city hall stated in the report.
The work in front of the main station building began in March and is expected to be completed by the end of June.
While on the side towards the Letmo department store, a pedestrian zone is to be created in place of the road, allowing the removal of the railing from the northernmost tram stop, the railing will remain at the southern stop adjacent to the station building. However, there should be a passage and a place for crossing to the station building. After the construction is completed, cars will only be able to drive along Nádražní Street in the direction from Nové Sady, but will only be able to turn under the viaduct and will not be able to continue to Benešova Street.
Nearly six years after the completion of the works, the situation for pedestrians in front of the station will improve. In 2017, the city reconstructed the tram islands, and due to the position of the Railway Authority, passages in the railings to the tram islands were removed. People then had to weave between trams in the track when crossing to the tram and into the station hall, instead of using the underpass, which is barrier-free but significantly longer.
The city leadership has been trying to reduce car traffic since before 2018, but after a change in political representation, the intent was abandoned. Only before last year's elections did they return to the project.
