Brno - Reconstruction of the area in front of the main train station began today in Brno. It caused chaos in traffic. The sidewalk from KFC to the Letmo department store is closed, as is the parallel road. Some drivers have therefore decided to drive on the tram tracks, which is prohibited. In the opposite direction, a line of cars formed heading under the viaduct. It is no longer possible to turn into Benešova Street from the station building, but only under the viaduct. The builders have also closed part of the sidewalk leading to the tram islands from Masaryk Street, so pedestrians must also get used to the restrictions. Police and city guards are overseeing compliance with the traffic signs.
After the reconstruction, which is set to be completed by June 30, the area in front of the station will be more pedestrian-friendly. Residents of Brno have long labeled it as one of the worst places in the city. A pedestrian zone will be created between the bus stops and the Letmo department store, and only traffic service vehicles will be allowed to enter. Although the road will remain on the opposite side, turning left into Benešova Street will be prohibited, and it will only be possible to go to the viaduct.
Portable traffic signs already prohibit turning left into Benešova from the station building, except for buses. The traffic flow around Letmo is hindered not only by traffic signage but also by the construction itself. "The traffic signage is clear, so our patrols are present on-site for preventive measures. When drivers see them, they comply with the rules." said police spokesperson David Chaloupka to ČTK. The presence of police and city guards was requested by the traffic department of the magistrate, according to their spokesperson Markéta Skřivánková. "It will take some time for drivers to get used to the changes in traffic organization," she stated.
Thanks to the creation of the pedestrian zone, it will be possible to walk from Letmo to the boarding island, as the railings will be removed. At the island by the station, the railing will be partially interrupted to allow the shortest route to the station building. After the reconstruction of the tram islands in 2017, pedestrians could not walk the shortest path to Letmo or the station, as the Railway Authority enforced railings along the entire length of the island. As a result, people started walking on the tram tracks.
