Prague - Prague 3 has completed the renovations of Tachovské náměstí, which is located beneath Vítkov hill at Hartigova (formerly Koněvova) street. The work cost 77 million crowns, of which 25.5 million crowns was obtained from the city hall. This was reported by Jiří Hannich, spokesperson for the district. Today, representatives of the district and the city hall ceremoniously opened the square. A new landmark of the space is a light column, and greenery and seating options have also been added. In the future, there will be an artwork at the tunnel's exit.
The rectangular Tachovské náměstí is located at the intersection of Hartigova and Husitská streets, at the exit of the pedestrian tunnel connecting Žižkov with Karlín. In the center of the square, a paved area with benches, flower beds, and trees has been created. There is also a terraced system built along the adjacent buildings for seating, and additional benches are located on the landings of the stairs to Vítkov and near the adjacent bike path. The light column is situated at the crossing of the path to Vítkov and the bike path.
According to the mayor of Prague 3, Michal Vronský (TOP 09), the square has gradually transformed into an unattractive place since the pedestrian tunnel was opened in 1953. "Almost to the day, 70 years later, we have completed another significant transformation of this location with a notable enhancement of its recreational function. I believe that on nice days, people will enjoy sitting here to rest after a walk or sports on the nearby Vítkov, chatting with neighbors, or meeting for informal gatherings," he stated.
The design of the square was created by the OV architects studio, which succeeded in the competition. The construction work was done by the company Gardenline based on the tender. According to architect Štěpán Valouch, the light column is meant to serve as a landmark. "It highlights the point where several directions intersect: the bike path, the tunnel, and Hartigova street, as well as the city and the park," he noted. The light will turn on along with the public lighting lamps and is angled downwards to avoid shining into the windows of surrounding buildings.
The only original furnishings of the square is a renovated pump from which water can be drawn. There is also a drinking fountain in the upper part of the square, and another feature is a functional baling scale referencing the city scale house, where goods used to be weighed by traders, who then paid taxes based on that. It stood in the square until the construction of the tunnel. The district has also announced an art competition for a work of art, which successfully included an installation featuring light elements utilizing mirrors. The city hall intends to install this near the tunnel's exit in the second half of next year.
