Prague - Prague is preparing the reconstruction of part of Letná Park for nine million crowns without VAT. It plans to replace the surfaces of sidewalks, add a skatepark, a roller-skating track, and bike racks along the bike path. The plan was approved today by the Prague councilors, and the contract will be announced this April.
The planned reconstruction mainly concerns the area around the Hanavský Pavilion. New resting places with benches will be created in locations with views. "The repair of a larger part of Letná Park will significantly improve its appearance and also the viewpoints from the edge of Letná Plateau," said the councilor for the environment, Jana Plamínková (Trojan Coalition/STAN).
According to the study of the reconstruction of Letná Park, the bridges and retaining walls are in poor condition, and the slopes have been damaged by erosion. Therefore, the plan includes their reinforcement with walls made of wire baskets filled with original stones.
The benches and public lighting will also be replaced. On the other hand, non-native trees should disappear; the city plans to replace acacias with oaks and hornbeams. The project also includes a new information system.
Letná Park was gradually established from 1860 on the site of former vineyards. In 1863, a neo-Renaissance restaurant was built, followed by landscaping, the construction of paths, and the planting of slopes along the entire length of Letná. The appearance of Letná Park was significantly marked by the construction of the monumental Stalin monument, which created a massive staircase to the Vltava River, where a metronome has been placed since 1991.
