Brno - The company that wants to build a residential and shopping building named Wilson in the center of Brno's Masaryk District must prepare further studies. It must address questions such as whether the five-story building will disrupt the character of the landscape. The South Moravian Regional Office mandated this in a decision published on the electronic notice board. Nearby residents are protesting the construction, with about 1,700 signatures on a petition against the plan.

The building is to be constructed on former military land by Wilson Property. The project plans to include 87 apartments, a supermarket covering nearly 2,000 square meters, and a cultural center for youth and seniors. It will also include garages for 100 cars.
Many local residents and some civic associations believe that the project lacks a leisure center that the neighborhood residents are missing, and that the building will take up too much space at the expense of greenery. Homeowners in the vicinity are also concerned that the new five-story structure will overshadow them. They are worried about increased traffic, noise, and dust.
"The environmental department evaluated the received comments as serious," states a statement from the regional office. According to the region, the company and the architects representing it must have further studies conducted by authorized specialists. They must also address the objection from the city hall that the proposal is not entirely in accordance with Brno's zoning plan.
Activists welcome the regional office's decision. Svatopluk Bartík, a councilor for the Greens in Brno-Center, believes that Brno will now "cancel the contract for the extremely unfavorable and illegal transfer of land designated for the construction of the building". The Greens have criticized the project from the beginning. They are particularly unhappy that the Brno-Center municipality leased a nearly half-hectare plot for construction to the company for 15 years at one crown per square meter per year, with the promise that after the completion of the complex, they would receive a seven times smaller parcel in the vicinity in return.
"Any entrepreneur would enter such a deal," Vavřín Havlíček, the head of the petition committee against the construction, told ČTK earlier. Opponents of the construction summarize their arguments on the website www.stop-wilson.info.
Conversely, those from the previous city leadership who approved the project, as well as representatives from the company, reject any wrongdoing. According to Jiří Maršálek, the managing director of Wilson Property, everything was conducted transparently and in accordance with the law.
