Pec pod Sněžkou (Trutnovsko) - The cable car to Sněžka resumed operation today after a nine-day extraordinary shutdown. The reason for the cable car's halt was the relocation of the transformer station at the transfer station on Růžová hora, which is related to the ongoing construction of a new cable car. The aging cable car now operates only on the lower section, while the upper section from Růžová hora to the summit has been permanently out of service since May 13. The lower section will run until September 2. Tourists showed interest in the cable car from its opening at 08:00 today. "In the first hour and a half of operation, about 100 people arrived, and more are still coming. The sun is shining, and the weather is ideal for a trip," said a cable car employee to ČTK. To reach the very top of Sněžka, tourists must walk 2.5 kilometers from the intermediate station at Růžová hora, which takes about 45 minutes. From September 3, people will only be able to get to Sněžka on foot. The new cable car is expected to start operating in spring 2014. Construction workers are currently digging a pit for the new lower cable car station and are demolishing the upper station on Sněžka. The upper station is already roofless and missing some walls. The demolished material is being transported to the valley by the existing cable car, and a helicopter is also being considered for use. The new cable car will have more comfortable four-person cabins instead of the current open seats for two passengers. The hourly capacity of the cable car will remain at 250 people. The ride to the summit is expected to be shortened from the current 25 minutes to about 16 minutes due to the higher speed of the new cable car. The cable car will also be better resistant to wind.
