The reconstruction of the underpass in Hradec Králové should be carried out by Redomo for 33.8 million CZK

Hradec Králové - The reconstruction of the underpass on Karel IV. Avenue in Hradec Králové is to be carried out by the Hradec construction company Redomo for 33.8 million crowns excluding VAT. There were three bidders in the competition, and the estimated price before the tender was 41 million crowns. The renovation of the underpass, which is one of the busiest places in the city, is expected to start in the spring. It should be completed by the end of this year. This was stated today by the Deputy Mayor for Investments Lukáš Řádek (TOP 09). The city has been preparing the reconstruction of the underpass for three years.

Originally, the city council planned to start the repairs in 2024, but everything was delayed due to the repeated selection process for a designer. Hradec obtained a building permit for the construction at the beginning of last year.

The builders will restore the ramps, stairs, glazed shelters, and internal structures. The underpass will receive new electrical wiring, sewage, and water supply systems. During the reconstruction, the underpass will remain in operation, with only short-term closures anticipated.

"We will transform this gray and unattractive place, through which thousands of citizens pass daily, into a pleasant connection where people will be happy to stop and take advantage of the opportunities it offers. We want to brighten the place, give it energy and style, restore shops, and add exhibition spaces," said Řádek.

The underpass on Karel IV. Avenue connects the railway station with the historic center of the city of a hundred thousand inhabitants. It passes under a four-lane road loop and still retains its form from the time it was built in the first half of the 1970s.

The underpass was designed by architect Karel Schmied senior. His son Karel Schmied contributed to the current project documentation for the renovation. "Thanks to this, the underpass will maintain its urban and architectural value," stated the city council.

The underpass, located beneath the intersection of Karel IV. and Střelecká streets, can be accessed from three sides. The city council has abandoned plans to build a fourth arm leading to the Katschnerka parking garage and Hořická Street due to ecological burdens and high expansion costs.
