Chrudim - In the city forests near Chrudim, in the area of Na Podhůře, a unique observation tower is being built, resembling more of a children's building set than a viewing object. It consists of larch boards with wooden spacers arranged in the shape of a three-sided pyramid, and almost without connecting elements. The design comes from the workshop of architect Martin Rajniš, who also designed the Poštovna at Sněžka and became famous for the controversial structure of the Wood Depot in the Jizera Mountains. The Chrudim observation tower, named Bára, will start serving the public on Saturday, June 21, said Chrudim's deputy mayor Petr Řezníček to ČTK.
"It will probably be the only edge structure in the world. It will be completed on May 31, and we are also preparing a cultural program for the ceremonial opening," said Řezníček. The total costs of the entire structure will reach approximately two million crowns.
The tower is expected to be 19 meters high at the peak, with an observation platform with a railing placed at around 15 meters. The larch boards are gradually assembled by the carpenters along the perimeter of the narrowing pyramid, inserting square spacers made from battens among them. Nails are only used for these spacers. Inside the structure, there will be a cylindrical staircase made from oak planks. The entire construction will be anchored to the ground with tension cables, allowing it to shrink as the structure dries. "The lifespan of the structure is about 50 years according to the architect," added the deputy mayor.
In the same way, a wooden cottage is being built in the vicinity of the observation tower, which will serve as a buffet and a support facility for the attraction's staff. All the wood used comes from the city forests. "There is about 95 cubic meters of larch and five cubic meters of oak," said Zdeněk Odvárka, director of the Chrudim Municipal Forests Administration to ČTK.
In recent years, several wooden observation towers of various constructions have been built in the Chrudim area. Since 2005, the Boika tower has been standing near Česká Lhota, while even older are the Barborka, Terezka, and Borůvka towers surrounding Proseč.
