Brno - The lookout tower on Holedná hill above Brno's Jundrov is almost finished. Since Thursday, four builders along with a crane operator have raised and connected three main tubes that arrived pre-assembled from Havířov. The so-called crown at the very top needs to be installed, which will be connected to the ground with steel cables. The lookout tower will be completed by mid-December, said Robert Arban from the company NBS Invest, which is in charge of the construction.
The construction of the nearly 35-meter-high lookout tower succeeded in the first year of the participatory budget. The city's cost will be 6.6 million crowns.
According to Arban, the work is quite demanding. "We have to stand on the lookout tower while screwing the individual parts together. It sways a bit. Besides the crown, we still need to connect one part of the stairs, finish the railing, and thread nets around it. There is still quite a bit of work to do, and it also depends on the weather; if it rains, we can't work," Arban said.
The Holedná game reserve, which is home to deer, is a popular destination for Brno residents, and from some spots with low trees, there are views of the surrounding area. However, the lookout tower was missing so far on the second highest peak of the forest between Jundrov, Bystrc, and Kohoutovice. The peak is at an elevation of 391 meters and will provide a view of a substantial part of Brno and hills, particularly to the west and north of the city.
Among the modern lookout towers in Brno is, for example, the construction on Ostrá horka in Soběšice from 2005, which stands on a hill just 13 meters higher. A lookout tower was also created a few years ago in Komárov on the former chimney of the Komec sports complex. The normally inaccessible observation tower of Pavilion G at the exhibition center can also serve as a lookout tower, and there is also a nearly century-old lookout tower in the Kamenný vrch forest park, which no longer offers views due to the overgrown forest.
