Prague - Senators will again discuss next week the now permitted demolition of the Prague building at the corner of Wenceslas Square and Opletalova Street. Last year, due to the case, authorities including the Prague City Hall were urged to respect public interest more than the interests of private business entities. The building authority of Prague 1 has granted permission for the demolition of the building in the Neo-Classical style, but the investor company has not yet obtained the permit to construct a modern nine-story building on the site. Senators from the culture committee have invited representatives from the Ministry of Culture, the City Hall, and the building department of Prague 1 to the meeting. "I believe they will support the efforts for a legal resolution of the case of the building at Wenceslas Square," said Vice President of the Association for the Protection and Development of Cultural Heritage of the Czech Republic, Marie Švábová. According to her, the decision leading to the permission for demolition was made in violation of the law, as it constitutes an irreversible intervention in the Prague monument reservation. The association participated in a petition against the demolition of the building, which was signed by 14,500 people, including architects and historians. Based on it, the Senate dealt with the case last year. It stated that the Ministry of Culture did not respect the purpose of the law on state monument care, according to which the state protects cultural monuments as an integral part of cultural heritage. The Department of Monument Care of the Prague City Hall then did not adhere to the government regulation regarding the Prague monument reservation according to the Senate's decision. The corner building next to the Jalta Hotel, the courtyard part of the hotel, and the remnants of the former Joint Stock Printing House, whose façade will remain preserved, should be demolished. In their place, a multifunctional complex should be built, which would be two floors higher than the neighboring buildings. The capital city has appealed against the zoning decision for the construction of the new facility.
