Prague - The corner building on Wenceslas Square next to the Jalta hotel has been proposed by experts to be declared a cultural monument. Michaela Ottová, chairwoman of the Art Historical Society, which prepared the proposal, told ČTK. The owner intends to demolish the building and construct a new one, which has been causing disputes for many months. The Ministry of Culture will decide on the potential heritage protection of the building. The development company Flow East, which owns the building, intends to start its demolition within five months. This was stated to journalists by James Woolf, chairman of the board of Flow East. The company is preparing to apply for a zoning decision. The former Minister of Culture Jiří Besser (STAN) enabled the demolition with his decision. The building authority of Prague 1 will decide whether the building will actually be demolished. However, the investor has not yet applied for a demolition order. It is unclear whether a potential declaration of the building as a cultural monument can overturn the previous decision of the Minister of Culture. ČTK is gathering opinions from experts. The public, along with some historians and architects, have previously opposed the demolition, claiming that the building is architecturally and urbanistically valuable. Last year, the Senate dealt with the case based on a petition signed by 14,500 people. The controversial decision of the Ministry of Culture was also discussed by the Constitutional Court.
