The competition determined the design of the new Brno city hall building, which will be more transparent and economical

Brno – The new building of the Brno city hall is to feature an open structure with an atrium, greenery, a water feature, and a passageway. The international competition that determined the building's design was won by the Tempo architects studio. Today, the city council approved the competition results organized by the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno. The new building is expected to be more accessible to the public and operate more efficiently, the city hall stated in a press release.

The building will be located next to the current city hall in Malinovského náměstí, near the central building authority. The design includes a combination of reinforced concrete, metal façade elements, natural materials, and greenery. Inside the new building, which has a square floor plan, there will be a passage connecting Koliště and Benešova streets. The architects also emphasized the building's flexibility. Closed offices can be transformed into smaller team spaces.

"All public services will be concentrated in the elevated ground floor, with counters systematically arranged around the atrium. The entrance from Koliště Street will function independently for the social services department, the city police station, or the multifunctional meeting room," said the city hall secretary Oliver Pospíšil.

Energy conservation and air purification are expected to be aided by the amount of greenery planted both around and inside the building. The water feature with greenery in the middle of the atrium will not only improve the climate but also dampen noise at the counters. Natural ventilation through the chimney effect will be ensured by a spacious atrium. The skylight will have opening flaps, allowing for the removal of warm air on the ground floor.

According to the councilor for urban planning and jury member Petr Bořecký (Brnoklidem), the new city hall will integrate into the urban character of significant public buildings along Brno's ring road. "The immediate surroundings of the new office will connect to the planned reconstruction of Benešova Street with several rows of alleys and improve permeability towards the developing Radlas area," Bořecký stated.

The next step, according to the director of the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno, Jan Tesárek, is to negotiate with the winning team about commissioning the development of all levels of project documentation.
