The Railway Administration has selected the design of the Dlouhá Míle terminal for the airport line

Prague – The Railway Administration has selected the design of the Dlouhá Míle terminal, which will be part of the new railway line section from Prague Ruzyně to Václav Havel Airport Prague. The architectural proposal by Pavlíček Hulín architects and AFRY won the public competition. The Railway Administration announced this today. The airport line is expected to start operating in 2028.

The terminal will be located near the runway of the airport, the Šestka Shopping Center, and the Prague Ring Road. "A new transport hub will be created, which will form an important connection between the railway and road transport, city and suburban buses, and eventually trams as well. The new P+R parking lot will significantly expand the infrastructural equipment of the broader area of the airport and relieve the communications of Prague 6,” said Jiří Svoboda, the General Director of the Railway Administration.

The technical feasibility of the winning design was verified by the company AFRY. According to them, it is the result of ongoing negotiations with the investor and other interested parties. "The architectural design fully utilizes the potential of the terminal not only as a transport hub but also as a destination point for possible future development in the area. Our priorities are functionality, safety, easy orientation, intuitiveness, smooth movement, and quick transfers. Additionally, the quality and attractiveness of the environment, which motivates the use of public transport," said Jiří Pavlíček from Pavlíček Hulín architects, which is the author of the architectural solution.

According to the creators of the proposal, the dominant feature of the future terminal will be its roofing. The height of the roof will vary according to the functions of the individual parts of the building. The roofing should be lowest over the bus platforms, then rise along a curve towards the main entrance to the underground section with transfer to the train. The roof is designed to be glazed in the middle section, allowing light to enter the lower levels. Its southern part contains photovoltaic panels that are intended to cover the terminal's consumption and potentially allow charging of electric vehicles in the parking lot. The solution also includes accompanying functions of the terminal, such as ticket sales, waiting areas, small shops, facilities for technology, drivers, and others.

The line to the airport is part of the railway from the center of Prague to Kladno, which is divided into several sections. Currently, only one section is completed, which is at the Negrelli Viaduct. Other sections are expected to start construction likely next year, starting with the reconstruction of Masaryk Station. The new connection is to be electrified, run on two tracks, and should allow train operations going to the airport and Kladno at ten-minute intervals. The estimated cost of the entire line is around 40 billion crowns.
