The buildings of the year are the Špork Palace or the winter stadium in Strašnice

Prague - The Buildings of the Year 2018 are the sports hall in Dolní Břežany, the Špork Palace in the center of Prague, the ice rink in Prague-Strašnice, a family house in Neveklov, and the residence U Michelského mlýna in Prague. The latter also received the public award. The title of Foreign Building of the Year was awarded to the Nordfjördur tunnel in Iceland. The results of the 26th edition were announced this evening by the Foundation for the Development of Architecture and Construction, which organizes the competition.

This year, 42 applications were submitted, ten fewer than last year. A seven-member expert jury nominated 15 buildings from them. They assessed the quality of construction, architectural design, and user comfort.

"On site visits to the buildings, it was once again confirmed that three basic factors make a good building - the investor, the architect, and the contractor. The jury considered the pros and cons, complexity, creativity, economy, and ecology, as well as energy efficiency,"
said the chairwoman of the jury, Radomíra Sedláková.

The sports hall in Dolní Břežany was evaluated by the jury as one of the best buildings because "with its lofty architectural concept, it has become a new active place for the community." According to the jury, the interior is designed simply and clearly. On one side are stands for 250 spectators, on the other entrances to changing rooms and technical equipment. The sports hall in Dolní Břežany also received the National Architecture Award on Tuesday, awarded by the Czech Chamber of Architects.

The Špork Palace in the center of Prague received recognition for exemplary and sensitive rehabilitation of a historical building in the Prague Monument Reserve, with a desirable integration into the street level of the city. The Škoda Icerink winter stadium has risen next to the Southern Connector in Prague's Strašnice. It connects to the school complex and its sports facilities. The complex consists of two halls with training ice surfaces without stands. The necessary facilities are spread out between them. On the ground floor are technical spaces and locker rooms, and on the upper floor are a gym and fitness area.

The family house in Neveklov received an award from the jury as "a simple, well-thought-out building sensitively placed in the landscape." Most rooms are open up to the sloping ceiling, which follows the roof line. The walls and sloped ceiling alternate between white and light natural wood color, which emphasizes the more compact parts of the house.

The residential block U Michelského mlýna consists of a group of four-story apartment buildings. They are positioned to each other in a floor plan approximately in the shape of the letter "L," creating a semi-enclosed group that has one core, or rather an inner garden, and another that takes advantage of the proximity of green slopes. The apartments are mostly three-room, each with its own terrace.

This year marked the fifth time that the Foreign Building of the Year was announced. Buildings completed by Czech companies could compete for the title. The Nordfjördur tunnel in Iceland, built by Metrostav, won. The length of the tunnel, which passes under a 1000-meter-high mountain mass, is 7908 meters.

The title could be awarded to new as well as reconstructed buildings, urban realizations of public spaces, landscape modifications, residential and non-residential buildings, transport and engineering structures, and specific construction works. A condition for entering the competition was the completion and commissioning or approval by the end of May this year.
