Prague - Hundreds of churches, chapels, monasteries, and other sacred buildings will open their doors this afternoon to those interested in viewing them at an unusual time. The churches will remain open all night, and those participating in the Night of Churches will offer many different programs. More than a thousand sacred buildings are set to open their gates across the country, with 280 sites in Prague and the surrounding area alone. All churches associated with the Ecumenical Council of Churches, including Orthodox and the Salvation Army, are participating in this year's Night of Churches. "People will explore the history of architecture from Gothic to contemporary buildings by architect Ladislav Lábus in one night. But it’s not just an impersonal entry into sacred architecture; it’s about meeting other people with whom we can talk, shake hands,” said the chairman of the Ecumenical Council of Churches, Daniel Fajfr. Last year, more than 1,300 churches participated in the Night of Churches, with organizers recording over 450,000 visitor entries. This year, according to the organizers, there is a growing interest from unconventional churches and chapels hidden from the view of passersby, such as those in apartment blocks or internal courtyards. In Prague, for instance, a route exploring "invisible" churches is prepared among seven thematic circuits. The entire program can be found on the website.
