Louny - Today, the people of Louny debated the proposed design of the small square in front of the Vrchlický Theatre. The piazzetta could become a reminder of the world-renowned painter Zdeněk Sýkora. The author of the design for the space in front of the Vrchlický Theatre is Josef Pleskot. "It was a challenge," he told ČTK.

For several years, there have been discussions in Louny about how to commemorate this significant native. In the end, one of the councilors asked Lenka Sýkorová, the wife of the artist, who is among the world pioneers in the use of computers in the preparation of visual artwork, to take on the task. She approached a well-known architect and brought him to the theatre. "At first glance, I saw that it could work," Pleskot mentioned.
It is no coincidence that the theatre is to be the space commemorating the artist. Sýkora actually created a unique fire curtain for the building in 1962. "The city could have owned a piece of work directly from Sýkora a long time ago," Sýkorová noted. However, the curtain disappeared during the reconstruction of the building in 2002. It is remembered by a large-format photograph in the entrance hall.
"We walked through the theatre and looking at the painting, it occurred to me that the proportions of the painting could be enlarged. Then it was just all drawn out on its own," Pleskot described to ČTK. The motif from the curtain would thus be reflected in the black-and-white geometric paving.
The Sýkora 2020 association would like the new square to be accessible by 2020, which marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the artist who, according to his wife, refused to emigrate and refused to leave Louny. He passed away in 2011.
"We want to commemorate this significant native and build something for him by 2020. But I expect that people who will be looking for funds will join in, so that this burden won't rest solely on the shoulders of the city," said Louny mayor Radovan Šabata to ČTK. The costs for the creation of the piazzetta are preliminarily estimated at just under six million crowns.
A petition has already been created in support of the project based on Pleskot's design. "It landed at the city hall on Tuesday, it has 836 signatures from all over Europe, but the city has 18,500 citizens, and I want to know everyone's opinions," the mayor pointed out.
