From May 12 to 18, the City Week will unfold in the streets of Brno – a community and neighborhood celebration in public space. Non-profit organizations, institutions, artists, clubs, cafes, and active individuals will participate in the event. The goal of the project is to establish a tradition that supports community sharing, meeting, culture, and entertainment. The transformation of the ordinary environment of streets and squares from inhospitable gray kingdoms of cars into a colorful and lively realm of human activities is based on voluntariness, spontaneity, and active participation of residents. The fundamental idea is that anyone with an idea to enhance public space and the desire to implement it can get involved in City Week. It does not matter whether the participant is an active individual, an organization, or an institution. The event's dramaturg Jakub Korínek explains the organizers' intention: “Cafes could offer tables for sitting, music groups will organize concerts, private galleries will offer outdoor exhibitions of paintings, a retiree from a house near the square will showcase his collection of postcards. Throughout City Week, residents will be able to play in the streets, experience alternative cultural events, and get to know their neighbors. The best view of the urban landscape is from a couch that someone has dragged out in front of the house; it is the best place to enjoy the scenery of buildings and people,” adds Korínek.

City Week follows the Day of the City – a celebration held on the third Wednesday of May – and also the neighborhood festivities Enjoy the City Differently, which have been organized by the Prague civic association Auto*mat since 2006. The organization of the event in Brno has been taken up by a new independent group URBAN DA BRNO, a loose association of individuals and representatives of Brno organizations active in the field of community and cultural activities, formed thanks to the project of the Partnership Foundation titled RE public BRNO. “The goal of the RE public BRNO project is to connect the energy of many active citizens of Brno and collectively think about possibilities for changes in the public space of Brno. It is precisely this platform that has enabled us to meet and collaboratively plan events such as City Week,” says Robert Sedlák from the Partnership Foundation. In addition to that, the group Brno hraje na CITY and the theater Druhý pád have significantly contributed to the preparations. The organizers believe that the event will revitalize the streets with cultural and neighborhood activity, help the city regain a human dimension, and awaken residents' interest in their city. “We would like the square to become our second living room and the streets to be places worth pausing for a moment,” concludes Jakub Korínek on behalf of the organizers.
