Prague – The emergency exit from the Prague metro station C Opatov will be adorned with a large-format painting called Flora and Fauna by artist Ondřej Vyhnánek. In a poll conducted by the transport company (DPP) and Prague 11, it was chosen by 509 out of 1491 voters. The area that the so-called mural art will cover is approximately 280 m². The DPP spokesperson Aneta Řehková reported this today. The company is also planning to decorate additional metro stations with large-format paintings. Previously, one appeared at the C Vltavská station.

"The Opatov mural is a small detail in terms of the overall reconstruction of the metro station, but for passengers heading to the Central Park, it will be a significant visual element," said councilor of Prague 11, Martin Duška (Pirates).

Creating the artwork will require about 110 liters of facade paint, tinting colors, and hundreds of spray cans in various shades. The actual creation of the painting is set to begin in the last week of October. "It will last until the end of this November, depending on the weather. The finished work will be unveiled simultaneously with the commissioning of the modernized Opatov metro station and the new elevators that the DPP is building here," Řehková stated.

Among the proposals that people voted on were a painting reminiscent of ancient cave paintings and contemporary abstraction created with spray paint. The third proposal was a painting composed of fragments that form a larger whole, and the fourth was the painting with flora and fauna, which won.

The city, in collaboration with the DPP, plans to create similar large-scale artworks in the project Art for the City by the end of this year at the metro stations Bořislavka, Černý Most, Nové Butovice, and Vltavská, as well as on the wall at the bus stop Spořilov. They are looking for artists through the MuralartUM 2020 competition. A total of 70 artists applied, submitting a total of 116 proposals. An expert commission has already selected the winning artworks for the metro stations Bořislavka, Nové Butovice, and the bus stop Spořilov.
