Prague - In the vicinity of the C line metro station Letňany in Prague, a modern district could be built in the future. The city organization Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) has begun preparing a study that will determine the basic form of the new urban district, which will include a number of municipal apartments. Experts, representatives of the city council and relevant local authorities, as well as local residents, will participate in its design. IPR spokesman Marek Vácha announced this today. In the past, several ideas have emerged on how to utilize the area, including hosting the Olympic Games, but none have been realized.

"This is a pilot project that has no equivalent in the Czech Republic so far. Following the example of successful foreign cases, we want to come up with a proposal for a progressive urban district where innovation equals responsibility, understanding of the needs of city residents, and an empathetic approach to the protection of vulnerable groups of people, animals, and plants," said Deputy Mayor Petr Hlaváček (STAN).

The proposal already counts on the creation of a so-called short-distance district, where people can live, work, and spend their leisure time. The concept aims to utilize innovative approaches that minimize environmental impact, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in both construction and operation. Emphasis will be placed on the use of local energy sources and low-emission transport, with a dominance of public transport. The new district will offer opportunities for leisure activities and will complement the public amenities that are lacking in this part of the metropolis.

The first buildings of the new urban district could begin to emerge at the beginning of the next decade; however, it is already necessary to prepare a territorial study, as construction requires comprehensive preparation not only in terms of the technical infrastructure of the area, Vácha stated.

The territorial study will be prepared by the IPR in cooperation with representatives of Prague 9, 18, and 19 and also with the town hall in Čakovice. Residents will also be able to participate in the discussion. IPR is preparing a number of events where the public will be introduced to the plan. Suggestions will be incorporated into the study. "Since we wish to plan a district that will benefit not only new residents but also neighbors from surrounding city parts, it is absolutely essential for us to know their opinions," added IPR director Ondřej Boháč.
