Prague – The leadership of Charles University today will inform journalists about the current state of preparations for the completion of the university campus at Albertov in Prague. Two buildings are planned there, the so-called Biocentrum and Globcentrum. According to previous information, this is to be the largest construction project of Charles University in the center of Prague in the last hundred years. The campus has been in preparation for several years and is expected to cost 2.5 billion crowns from the state budget. In recent days, the university has obtained a zoning decision for both planned buildings, according to its spokesperson Václav Hájek.
The new campus at Albertov is to be built according to the design by the studio Znamení čtyř, which won the architectural competition. The university signed a contract with them in 2017 for the creation of project documentation and engineering activities. According to the original plan, construction was supposed to start as early as last January or February, and both centers were meant to be operational from 2022. However, work on the project has been slower than the university administration initially expected.
Biocentrum and Globcentrum are intended to serve as research facilities for the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, the Faculty of Science, and the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University. About 1,200 people are expected to work in them. The Biocentrum will focus on understanding living systems for the needs of human health, new biotechnologies, and biodiversity protection. Research at the Globcentrum will focus on individual aspects of global changes, such as the dynamics of climate change, natural threats and risks, or the dynamics of the spread of animal species and vegetation.
