Brno - The Brno street Veveří is to remain fully passable from Konečný to Žerotínovo Square even after the complete reconstruction, which is planned to start after the completion of the large city ring road at Žabovřeská. This is a requirement from the current leadership of Brno and the Brno-střed district. Anna Dudková from the press department of the Brno city hall and spokesperson of Brno-střed Kateřina Dobešová stated this to ČTK. In both cases, the political representation has changed after last year's elections.

Veveří was to become partially impassable after the reconstruction at the intersection with Grohova, and the intention was to give more space to life on the street at the expense of car traffic. Veveří has the largest concentration of services, shops, or hospitality compared to other main streets that lead into the historical center of the city, and there is also significant foot traffic, including hundreds of students. The traffic load was supposed to be taken over primarily by the large city ring road and also by the parallel Kounicova street.

Comments from the city and district leadership come at a time when the documentation for the zoning decision is complete. "The project will undergo changes, it will need to be revised, and preparations will continue," Dudková stated. There is approximately three years left for preparation, with the completion of Žabovřeská expected in 2022. The mayor of Brno-střed Vojtěch Mencl (ODS) is concerned about increased traffic in Kounicova and other surrounding streets, but his arguments rely on the fact that Veveří will close before the completion of the large city ring road.

Designers from the PK Ossendorf office stated during the project presentation two years ago that 11,000 cars travel on Veveří, of which 6,000 are transiting. "These cars need to be diverted to the large city ring road. There is no reason for people to drive from the south through Úvoz and Veveří," said designer Vlastimil Novák. In addition to the construction of Žabovřeská, which can take on traffic from the city center, it is necessary to direct cars coming from Vídeňská onto the ring road and also implement measures in the northern part of the city in Žabovřesky to prevent transit traffic from heading from Pod Kaštany street to Veveří.

The technical condition of the street is already poor today, which is especially visible on the tram tracks. The transport company was preparing to repair the track from Grohova to Žerotínovo Square in the spring while maintaining single-track operation, but ultimately postponed it.
