Brno - The Brno street Veveří is set to become a thoroughfare after the planned reconstruction, with transit traffic disappearing and enhancing the role of pedestrian traffic, making cyclists feel much safer. However, to prevent transit traffic, it is first necessary to complete the large city ring road in the section at Žabovřeská and ensure the diversion of cars coming from Vídeňská to Mendlovo náměstí. The most stringent measure will be the so-called Grohova stop, where there will be a ban on entry, and only deliveries will be allowed, said designer Vlastimil Novák from the PK Ossendorf office at a press conference today.
Currently, approximately 11,000 cars travel along Veveří daily, with over 6,000 of them being transit traffic, according to the designers. “These cars need to be diverted to the large city ring road. There is no reason for people to drive from the south through Úvoz and Veveří,” said Novák. In addition to the construction of Žabovřeská, which can take on the burden from the city center, it is necessary to direct cars coming from Vídeňská onto the ring road and to take measures in the northern part of the city in Žabovřesky to prevent transit traffic from heading from Pod Kaštany street to Veveří.
So far, Veveří primarily serves a residential and commercial function, hosting a number of restaurants, pubs, and shops with various goods. “Our goal is to ensure that it remains a good place to live and that business flourishes here. Therefore, the traffic service for the street will be maintained,” said the deputy for transport Matěj Hollan.
The street will maintain mature greenery, which will be slightly supplemented, and around 110 parking spaces will be increased by another thirty. Cyclists will have a safely designated route in the upper part from Konečné náměstí, while measures will be different in the narrower lower part of the street.
Pedestrians also play a significant role in Veveří, as they head to restaurants and shops, and several higher education institutions are located there, Novák stated.
According to him, Veveří could be the first Western-style city street, similar to Maria Hilfe Strasse in Vienna. “It is important to view Veveří as a street, not as a traffic artery. In the future, there are also considerations for reconstruction from Konečné náměstí to Minská.”
Construction could begin around 2019 or 2020, but definitely after the completion of Žabovřeská. It is expected to last about two years, as it will be necessary to reconstruct all networks. It is already counted that at least single-track tram operation will be preserved.
