Mladá Boleslav - In Mladá Boleslav, the long-prepared construction of a parking garage with a capacity of 110 spaces will begin in October near Jaselská Street. This investment will cost the city 51 million korunas and is related to the construction of a nearby university campus. The parking facility will be built near the employment office and is expected to be completed in spring 2007. Robin Povšík, the deputy mayor, stated this today.

The city originally prepared a project for a larger facility with a capacity of 157 parking spaces. However, the project was modified to its current form because the original variant would have cost the city several tens of millions of korunas more. The parking garage could serve the needs of the university campus, but also partly for visitors or employees of nearby high schools, banks, or the theater. By saving costs on the parking garage, the city gained the necessary funds to modify the surrounding streets.
This year, the city will spend eight million korunas on this investment, with the remaining amount to be covered by the budget for next year. According to Povšík, even the reduced capacity of the parking garage should be sufficient for the needs of this area. However, he believes it is essential for the city to ensure the construction of another parking facility in Komenského Square as soon as possible.
The city leadership is also beginning to consider the possibility of abolishing the so-called blue parking zones in the historic center, which are designated for owners of residential and subscriber parking permits. Many of them, according to Povšík, wish to be able to park not only near their home or workplace but also anywhere in this parking zone. However, if the city were to abolish the blue zones, parking permit holders would also lose their current certainty of always finding a free parking space near their apartment or work. Therefore, Povšík has sent out a call to all permit holders to express in writing by August 31 whether they wish to maintain the current status or seek a change. Once their opinion is known, the city intends to begin preparing possible changes according to Povšík. The abolition of the blue zones would also be welcomed by many short-term visitors to the city, who would then have more options to park in the zone for the applicable fee.
