Prague - Prague city councilors will receive recommendations in March on how to proceed with the potential completion of the Old Town Square. Jiří Kotalík, the chairman of the working committee addressing this issue, told ČTK. At the same time, the committee will also publish results from the September conference. About 100 people attended the conference, where they discussed not only the potential reconstruction of the demolished wing of the Old Town Hall but also the renovation of the entire square. According to Kotalík, the greatest benefit of the conference was that the topic was addressed. While some demanded reconstruction in its historical form, others called for greater modernity. "Extreme opinions also emerged," Kotalík said. Committee members now want to develop the entire debate through recordings and summarize it in the upcoming publication, which will also include urban studies of the square. Kotalík does not hide his opinion that he considers the current state of the square to be a temporary solution that is not sustainable in the long term. Architects have been addressing the shape of one of the most famous Czech squares for over 100 years. The most emotions are stirred by the gap that was created after the non-original part of the town hall was destroyed during World War II. A park now occupies that space. Since 1901, eight architectural competitions have been announced, but none of the proposals have been realized. The reasons are mainly differing opinions on the concept of the building that should be constructed here. The Prague ODS party came up with the old-new idea for the completion of the town hall before the last municipal elections.
