Brno - Brno plans to build a health and social complex with 210 beds in the former long-term care hospital at Červený kopec. The mayor's deputy Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) told journalists today. It is estimated to cost around 300 million crowns. Recently, long-term patients moved from the building to the renovated premises of the Hospital of the Merciful Brothers. Currently, the building serves as temporary housing for about 50 people from the soon-to-close hostel on Šámalova street. According to Hladík, the investment is a matter for the next electoral term.

The councilors of Brno today approved the announcement of an architectural competition for the design of the complex. "We will announce it on June 1, and interested parties will be able to apply with their portfolios for three weeks. An expert committee will then select six or seven candidates who will have the expertise and experience to propose not only the envelope but also the layout and efficiency of functions within the area," Hladík stated.

According to him, most of the buildings will be demolished, except for one that could be used. More than 200 beds will be created, which will be on the border of healthcare and social care, that is, a facility between a long-term care hospital and a senior citizens' home. Both doctors and social workers should serve in it. According to Hladík, it currently happens, for instance, in homes where seniors due to poor health go to the hospital for a while, then return, which is exhausting for them and the staff.

The beds in the new complex should be partially covered by social insurance and partially by health insurance. If the negotiations do not work out, according to Hladík, a long-term care hospital or a home could arise in the building. It will include a National Oversight Center for Telemedicine and Emergency Calling or an educational health center.

Currently, people from the canceled hostel on Šámalova street live in the building at Červený kopec, to whom the city provided temporary housing until September 4. With the help of social workers, people are looking for apartments, places in shelters or dormitories. According to Hladík, two families are already negotiating moving to other housing. Residents from the surrounding area of the former hospital were concerned about the possibility of a hostel for socially weaker citizens being built in the vicinity.
