Brno - The construction of a new theater in the center of Brno officially began yesterday with the laying of the foundation stone. The stage will be built by the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU). It will primarily serve student musical theater, namely opera and musical. The total costs amount to approximately 350 million crowns, as reported by ČTK from school representatives. Construction work is expected to last until the end of 2011. The Janáček Academy will acquire a top-equipped facility for teaching stage technologies in the new building, allowing students to better master work with light and sound according to contemporary global trends. The Brno cultural community can also look forward to a venue dedicated to young art. The theater is being built in a partly developed gap at Orlí Street, which was created during World War II. In the past, there were, for example, restoration workshops of the Moravian Gallery. For a long time, minorities who have their monastery nearby protested against the construction. They found the building too tall. The architectural project already received international recognition in 2007 at a competition in Chicago. The street-facing part of the building is lower, reflecting the scale of the street. The adjoining part is designed as a "natural block" - a house partially covered in greenery. The main space is the theater hall, which will accommodate about 110 spectators. The public will be served by a café on the ground floor with a summer garden in the open vestibule. From the café, interested parties can access a wine cellar in the historical basements from the baroque period. The back part of the building will house the theater's operational facilities, including cloakrooms, classrooms, and rehearsal rooms. The building was designed by architects Pavel Rada and Milan Rak. The Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts has so far used the Marta studio on Bayerova Street, the Barka theater in Královo Pole, and the Cabinet of Muses on Sukova Street for student theater. However, it did not have a suitable space for musical theater.
